  1. I love it. My favorite brain-bender: “China will soon become the No. 1 English-speaking country in the world.”

Pssh. Whatever. We’re still, like, totally the coolest country.

The most significant of the questions, of course, is the last one: What does it all mean? Well, I think it means a lot more than this, but for starters: It means we’re going to have to start changing our mindset from, say, “Here’s how I’ll protect American jobs from being sent overseas” to something more like “Here’s how we can do our part to play nice and make friends in the global sandbox.”

But..but.. I’m an american, I NEED someone to tell me what it all means! Come on professor, educate me…please?

    Mike and CRK:

Watching this vid made me breathless. I think what it means is “Hang on to your hats because your kids and grandkids are going to be taking you on one wild ride.”

    Giddy ‘up.

One thing it surely means is we need to teach ourselves and our kids highly flexible critical thinking skills, and forget about training specific to one industry, one technology or one body of information. That’s a fool’s errand. With the world changing so quickly, our jobs will change quickly, and our brains will need to change quickly to avoid obsolescence. Flexible critical thinking skills would seem to have a longer shelf life in this world than industry-specific training.

The other thing it means is to diversify your 401(k) to include international investments.

Brava Ellen, these things are fabulous. Thanks.

Loveland hits it on the head. Our kids need to learn how to read, write, compute, and think. And they need to be exposed to huge fast change.

I think kids already know how to adapt. But I don’t think they know how to think.

How much of the curriculum in K – 12 and college spurs critical thinking? Damn little.

And Keliher is also onto something — we need to learn how to play well with others and how to spread the real lessons and benefits of democracy. Birth rates and population totals in presentations like this can seem rather zenophobic — “they” are soon going to overwhelm us.

This tired tattered planet does not need to be burdened with one single more human being. Six billion plus is more than enough. But the population bomb keeps ticking. The number-one most effective birth-control technique? Education of women.

There have been many editorial cartoons showing America joining the world community again with the election of Barack Obama. And not a minute too soon.
