“…With Liberty and Justice for Straights.”

What a sad day for Americans who believe we are all created equal.

The California Supreme Court today ruled (with one dissenter) that Proposition 8 is constitutional. As you’ll recall from last fall’s election, Proposition 8 was an amendment to California’s constitution passed by 52% of that state’s voters declaring “marriage” was defined as the union between one man and one woman.

Or, as the lovely but dense Miss California puts it, “opposites’ marriage.”

Why was Proposition 8 even necessary? Well, this same supreme court had ruled 4-3 just six months earlier that same-sex marriages were protected under that state’s equal protections clause.

Well! My dears! The response from fundamentalist Christians, loud-mouth blowhards, and piously devout civil servants who have unspeakable dreams was immediate outrage. With all of the problems we faced last spring and summer (wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the national deficit, a crumbling economy, etc.) “GAY MARRIAGE” (like “FLAG BURNING” in the 2004 election) was waved before the stupified crowd like a red cape before a bull.

And just to show there were no hard feelings (and thereby actually showing an alarming lack of consistent jurisprudence) the California court today did allow the 18,000 couples who had taken the court at its word and married between May and November could stay “married.” But, henceforth, the exact same, same-sex unions will be “civil” only.

If you don’t believe this is an egregious usurpation of power by “the people,” try substituting the words “black and white” into these bans. Or “Protestant and Catholic.” Or “blue eyes and brown eyes.”

Now hear this: whom I love and whom I choose to share my life with are decisions you have no say in. None. I was born equal to you. “He’s got the WHOLE world in his hands.” I was created in a divine image. God does not make mistakes.
