    To think that only 5 years ago this journalist would have been dragged off and executed by firing squad for pulling such a stunt shows how far Iraq has come. The right to protest – this is progress that only the enlightened recognize.

    The NYTimes today has an interesting round-up of some of the reaction of people in Iraq to this insult. (Tossing the shoes is the lowest of the low insult. It means you are less than the dirt on the bottom of my shoes.)
    While al-Zaidi (the shoe-tossing reporter) remains in custody, many Iraqis are calling him a hero; some even say he should become the new prime minister because he had the courage to stand up to the American president.
